Certification Update March 21, 2014

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 7:39 AM

Dear Members:

Please read this message when you are on a break from your regular duties.

Members who were unable to attend yesterday’s meeting have been contacting us to ask how they can access a card for signing. There are various avenues open to you.

If you are on the Prince George campus, you can:

*  take a break and come by the FA Office to sign there;
* sign at one of the upcoming events (as listed in our previous message); or
* request a one-on-one meeting at your office or other convenient location. We’re happy to bring the cards to you!

As of Friday, you will also be able to contact any member of the Certification Committee directly. All members of the committee will then have cards, and they will be able to answer your questions directly.

If you are at a regional campus or on sabbatical, you can:

* attend one of our regional signing/information events in early February; or
* request a card mailout.

Those at regional campuses or on sabbatical can also request teleconference meetings with a certification committee volunteer to discuss certification and have questions answered.

We hope this answers some of your questions about how to access a card.

Sincerely, Jacqueline and Erik

Dear Members:

Please read this email when you are on a break from your regular duties.

We would like to remind you of the certification events coming up in the next ten days.  Individual notices will be sent out regarding these events, but since we have been receiving many questions we thought it best to clarify dates and arrangements now.

On Tuesday 28 January, there will be an Open House and card-signing event at the FA office from 10 to 1. Drop by on a work break to have your questions answered and to sign a card if you wish.

Later (1—3 PM) on Tuesday 28 January, there will be a panel discussion of certification with guests Rick Kool (president of CUFA-BC and member of the unionized faculty association at Royal Roads); Jason Price (leader of the certification drive at UVic); Wayne Peters (president of CAUT and member of the unionized association at UPEI); and Leo McGrady (labour lawyer and our counsel for the certification process). We are working on plans for recording/transmitting this panel so that all members can access it. Those details will be relayed in the official event announcement.

On Thursday 30 January, there will be another Open House at the FA office from 12 to 1.

We look forward to seeing you at these events!

 Sincerely, Jacqueline and Erik

Dear Members:

I have heard from quite a few of you who weren’t able to make today’s session. Therefore, here’s a brief summary of the happenings. Please read this email when you are on a break from your regular duties.

The UNBC-FA announced its certification drive and the motion in support of certification passed by the UNBC-FA Executive. I discussed the reasons for this development, including the extremely high costs and unsustainability of arbitration. Erik Jensen, chair of the UNBC-FA Certification Committee, then spoke and discussed his role and the process by which UNBC would become a certified union. Former chief negotiator Darwyn Coxson spoke about the 2012—2014 negotiation round and why he believes it is time for the Association to certify. He was followed by Ted Binnema, member of the previous negotiating team, who spoke about his experiences on the negotiating committee and his conviction that we must be certified to bargain effectively in the new round. Finally, Darwyn Coxson signed the first membership card, followed by Erik, Ted, and former presidents Lee Keener and Ken Prkachin. There was then a lively question-and-answer session with the audience. The session concluded with many participants signing certification cards.

Those who missed today’s event will find much discussion and information in the weeks to come. Friday will see the release of a newsletter dedicated to certification. Tuesday will be “Certification Day,” with an open house at the FA Office (10—1) and a panel discussion with guests from 1 to 3. On Thurday 30 January there will be another open house at the FA Office between 12 and 1.

We look forward to seeing you at our events and to discussing this important issue with you.

Sincerely Jacqueline
